Anthony works predominantly with wood, making use of locally felled trees and of reused timber, often railway sleepers. The pieces are carved and shaped using both hand and power tools. He takes his inspiration from the dynamic energy of the natural world, the flowing lines and swirling rhythms of the landscape, the active, animated aspects of nature.
Having come originally from an archaeological background, a lasting legacy has been a concern with the underlying structure of a place, an awareness of something more than just the visible surface. Through openings, cracks and deep grooves within the work he attempts to convey a sense of looking beneath and beyond, of reaching inside to discern the interconnection of different elements, the layers of meaning which contribute to the whole.
